Authors Amongst Us with Jenna Blum

After a summer hiatus, the third series of "Authors Amongst Us: Evenings of Books, Brie & Beaujolais" continues on Tuesday, September 14, at the Hampshire House with a talk by local author Jenna Blum on her book, The Stormchasers (2010).

The Stormchasers is the story of twins, Karena and Charles Jorge. As teenagers, Karena had always been the one to look out for her brother Charles, who suffers from bipolar disorder. But as Charles begins to refuse medication and his manic tendencies worsen, Karena finds herself caught between her loyalty to her brother and her fear for his life. Always obsessed with severe weather, whose wild and magic energy seems to mirror his own impulses, Charles begins chasing storms, and his behavior grows increasingly erratic... until a terrifying chase with Karena ends with deadly consequences, tearing the twins apart and changing their lives forever.

Jenna Blum also authored the New York Times Best-Seller Those Who Save Us (2004.) She lives in Boston and runs master novel workshops for Grub Street Writers. She spends her non-writing time on the road talking to book clubs about Those Who Save Us, which in addition to being a New York Times bestseller, was a Boston Globe bestseller, the winner of the 2005 Ribalow Prize, a Borders Book Club pick, and a favorite with book clubs across the country. Jenna is very excited to continue her speaking tour on The Stormchasers, a novel she researched by chasing tornadoes for five years.

The cost is $15 per lecture for BHCA members in advance or $20 at the door, and $25 for non-BHCA members. Reservations may be made in advance on www.bhcivic.org or by calling 617-227-1922. The events begin with refreshments at 5:30 p.m., followed by the lecture from 6:00-7:00p.m.

Check us out on Boston.com!

Cheers is featured in the Boston.com article,
"Nine Myths About Boston".

First of all, nobody is going to know your name. Second, don't expect the "Cheers" you're used to from the popular TV sitcom when you enter the door at the Bull & Finch Pub on Beacon Hill. The interior looks nothing like Sam Malone's bar, and we highly doubt the former, fictional Red Sox pitcher had this much merchandise for sale. Although, we're sure the bartenders would love to hear you say, "Put it on Norm's tab" for the billionth time.

Sidewalk Sam's Postcards from Boston

Tina's notes:
WOW! Saturday was a perfect New England late-summer day, with lots of nice folks doing art on the sidewalk. The Pond was pretty crowded, so that was lovely. We always call this last week "Postcards from Boston" and we even had a family from Boston, England stop by! How fun is that? Also folks from Finland, Ecuador, Panama, Spain, some "Pabst Beer" fans from Wisconsin and, of course, Massachusetts visitors to Boston as well. Some of our "regulars" returned from vacations and were sad (as was I) that the season was ending.

Chinese Caligraphy at the Frog Pond

This week, we have guest commentary from
Sidewalk Sam's companion artist
(and Frog Pond craft photographer) Tina Guilleman!

It was a perfect Boston day. (Finally!) Sunny, but breezy.
It felt great. While the Pond was quieter than normal,
we did Chinese Calligraphy Scrolls.

The kids (and a lot of adults!) really concentrated.

We had examples of Chinese characters,

but we also hosted a large amount of "real" Chinese visitors
and they really enjoyed it.

The kids did some very nice art,
decorating (after they wrote the characters in ink)
with stamps, stickers and markers.

When they were done, we gave them a choice of cool ribbons
to wrap around their scrolls.

Everyone had another super day!

Enjoy the pictures!

The British Encampment at Faneuil Hall

Why are all these British Loyalists waiting in line?

They're about to enjoy a delicious buffet at Cheers Faneuil Hall!

This 18th century garrison was stationed on the Boston Common
in celebration of the Freedom Trail's 50th Anniversary.

After three days of reenactments this weekend
sponsored by the Freedom Trail Foundation,
these troops were ready for some 21st century fare!

Our staff, exhausted, but satisfied after serving the troops.

"Making Froggie Friends" at the Frog Pond

This Saturday, Sidewalk Sam and his friends helped Frog Pond visitors make foam homes for little frog friends.

A Jurassic sample created by Sam's friends

If the frog gets to the castle,
maybe the princess will give him a kiss!

A frog's underwater world, with a red fish!

Because frogs live in the water and on land, they have all sorts of friends, including checkered dolphins and yellow dinosaurs.

An impressive three-dimensional habitat!

Frogs love flowers, gems, and bright colors!

This frog and dolphin are going to explore the castle.

There's a lot for this frog to explore!

This frog is watching his world take shape around him.
